Renowned director Hideo Kojima reveals that Death Stranding 2, though different in terms of combat, shares similarities with his other creation, Metal Gear Solid 5. Fans of the series can expect not only new gameplay but a nod to the familiar stealth experience that has been a Kojima hallmark.
In a fascinating discussion with Edge magazine’s issue 411, Kojima noted the sequel as a modern iteration of the iconic 2015 title. He noted, “I felt that myself when I played the game,” acknowledging the uncanny resemblance between the games.
Central to this comparison is the feeling players get upon returning to their base. Kojima explains, “When you return to your bed on the Magellan, it’s the same feeling as returning to the plant in Metal Gear.” This sense of homecoming is reflected in the game’s design and enhances player immersion.
Notably, the VR challenges featured in Death Stranding 2 offer a striking similarity to the Metal Gear series’ VR Missions, even incorporating sound effects that evoke nostalgic memories for players.
Kojima recently discussed the evolution of gameplay from the original Death Stranding to its sequel. He draws parallels with how Metal Gear Solid 1 introduced stealth, evolving into more open combat opportunities in Metal Gear Solid 2. “For the sequel, we wanted to allow players that want to fight to do so more freely,” Kojima emphasizes.
Kojima’s forward-thinking approach is evident as he prepares for the future. He once considered he might have limited time left to innovate and entrusted his assistant with “a USB stick with all my ideas” as a testament to his creative legacy.
