Dragon Age aficionados might be intrigued to learn about EA’s unique perspective on RPG enthusiasts, as described by a veteran from the esteemed game series. During a discussion with GamesRadar+, BioWare veteran David Gaider shared insights about the misconceptions EA had regarding devoted RPG players.

Before departing from BioWare, Gaider observed that his gaming preferences were considered somewhat “old-school” by Electronic Arts. “I was very vocal on the Dragon Age team,” he noted. “I sought to maintain traditional mechanics,” which often clashed with EA’s inclination towards more “action-y and slick” presentations. This divergence in vision made Gaider’s traditionalist views “not very welcome” despite his significant contributions to many iconic RPGs.

According to Gaider, EA seemingly viewed the traditional RPG market with skepticism, curiously labeling it as being in a “cave.” He explains, “The cave was where nerds resided. These fans were so loyal to the RPG genre that there wasn’t a perceived need to market to them,” Gaider recalled. The company felt “you didn’t have to try and appeal to them,” focusing instead on reaching a “larger” audience outside of this dedicated group.

Ultimately, EA’s focus shifted towards a broader audience, materializing its strategy in projects such as Anthem. Unfortunately, this live-service game faltered upon release, leading to its abandonment within two years. In the aftermath, BioWare managed to realign its efforts towards what it excels at—single-player RPGs, resulting in titles like last year’s Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Fans also eagerly await the upcoming Mass Effect 5, though its release is still some time away.

Whether you’re nestled in the so-called “cave” or exploring new terrains, check out this list of the best RPGs you can dive into today.
