Sam Witwer has dropped some intriguing hints about the upcoming Star Wars animated TV series, Maul: Shadow Lord. In an exciting revelation, Witwer describes the series as a tale of bad guys battling even worse adversaries.
Speaking with Katee Sackhoff on her new podcast, The Sackhoff Show, Witwer shared, “[Maul’s] like, ‘Is that what [Sidious] had in mind? This is a little scary.’ Maul emerges from a time of swords, sorcery, and knights, but now he faces the colorless expanse of a mechanized Empire. He questions, ‘Is this the universe we aimed to create?’
This Disney Plus animated series is set roughly a year after the Clone Wars. It tracks the journey of the former Sith lord, Maul, as he attempts to rebuild his criminal empire and train a new apprentice during the formidable reign of the Galactic Empire.
Crafted by none other than Dave Filoni, who takes on the role of executive producer, the show features Matt Michnovitz as head writer and Brad Rau as supervising director. While the voice cast remains largely under wraps, two new characters are revealed: a Twi’lek who becomes Maul’s new apprentice and an inquisitive Jedi-hunter named Marrok.
Witwer continues, “It’s about bad guys vs. worse guys. This isn’t a show about discovering Maul’s soft side. We’re staying away from that. But is he as ruthless as Sidious or Vader? Certainly not. From a Sith viewpoint, Maul has his flaws and occasional moments of humanity due to past experiences.”
Star Wars – Maul: Shadow Lord is anticipated to premiere on Disney Plus in 2026. If you’re looking for more streaming options, explore our compilation of the best Disney Plus shows and the best Disney Plus movies to enjoy right now.
