Director Danny Boyle promises that 28 Years Later will diverge significantly from typical zombie apocalypse narratives. This film is a direct sequel to his acclaimed 2002 release, 28 Days Later, which reshaped the zombie horror genre.

“In fact, Alex [Garland] at one point penned a script that felt predictable,” Boyle shared in an IGN interview. “It touched on themes like weaponized viruses by shadowy organizations, but neither of us felt inspired by it. Eventually, we envisioned an expansive project that deviated from merely spreading chaos across Europe and beyond.”

Released in 2002, 28 Days Later featured Cillian Murphy as a bicycle courier who awakens from a coma to discover a world ravaged by the ‘rage virus.’ While Boyle hesitates to label it a zombie film—similar to how The Last of Us isn’t strictly a zombie game—the movie is credited with revitalizing the subgenre.

Boyle further explained, “We focused inward, setting our lens on England itself. Our approach defied expectations, driven by the profound changes in Britain since the original film. Notably influenced by events like Brexit, the film taps into these shifts. Such films aren’t mere lectures but rather a reflection on individual and societal transformations.”

28 Years Later, starring Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes, explores the chilling discoveries a group of island survivors make upon returning to the mainland.

Set to release on June 20, 2025, this much-anticipated sequel is among the most exciting movies arriving in 2025. Don’t miss out on more cinematic excitement by checking our list of upcoming movie release dates.
