After making waves at the box office, fans of A Minecraft Movie won’t have long to wait before they can stream it from home. The much-anticipated film is set to arrive on Max by next week.
Directed by the talented Jared Hess, the movie raked in an astounding $951 million globally, with $313 million coming from its opening weekend alone. Audiences gathered eagerly to watch Jack Black famously shout “chicken jockey,” then leave the scene coolly, placing it as the second most successful video game movie adaptation after The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Now, fans can experience the thrill again with the film’s home debut on June 20, as confirmed by Variety.
If you’ve been hiding under a pixelated rock, the Minecraft Movie chronicles a group of characters transported into the Overworld, joining forces with an overenthusiastic miner, Steve (played by Black), to navigate the unpredictable landscape. Despite its massive popularity, the movie received a lukewarm response from critics, earning just a 48% rating, while other adaptations like Sonic the Hedgehog have not dipped below 64%.
Despite the critics’ reactions, a second Minecraft movie seems all but confirmed. Warner Bros Pictures co-chairman and CEOs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy have stated via Deadline that it’s been added to the studio’s upcoming projects following the tantalizing ending of the first film.
While we await Steve’s return, we’re keeping track of all the upcoming video game movies to watch for. Stay tuned for more movie news, features, and reviews delivered right to your inbox.
