The creator behind the immensely popular Stardew Valley, Eric ‘ConcernedApe’ Barone, has reportedly expressed interest in potentially rescuing Hytale. This highly anticipated blocky adventure game, reminiscent of Minecraft, captured the imagination of millions during its six years of development, only to be cancelled recently.
Hytale, which generated more than 61 million trailer views, was thought to be the next big thing in survival gaming. The excitement was so palpable that even Riot Games, known for League of Legends, acquired both the game and its developer, Hypixel Studios. However, both the game and studio have now been shut down, as the team “couldn’t bring Hytale to life in a way that truly delivered on its promise.”
Amidst this, another influential indie developer has shown interest in reviving the title. A recent Discord exchange shared by content creator Myne, displayed a conversation with Barone, where he admitted he could “possibly” invest to save Hytale.
Yet, Barone would need to understand fully “what the plan is, why it failed initially (behind the scenes), etc.,” before committing the significant financial resources needed for such a revival.
Barone isn’t alone in contemplating a rescue. The original founder of Hypixel Studios, Simon Collins-Laflamme, although no longer with the studio by its end, humorously hinted at a potential $25-million buy-back from Riot. His conditions were clear: “No Kickstarter, just raw passion, high pressure, and high risk-taking.”
Reports reveal that at one point, development of Hytale was “burning” up to $400,000 each month. Simon also mentioned turning down “way more money” before their partnership with Riot Games. The future of Hytale remains uncertain, but it still ignites passion among fans and developers alike.
