Earlier this week, it was announced that Dune and Blade Runner 2049 director, Denis Villeneuve, is set to direct the next James Bond movie. However, intriguing reports suggest he won’t have the final say on the film’s theatrical cut.
This insight comes from Puck, which mentions that the acclaimed filmmaker’s involvement is, for now, a singular endeavor. Once he concludes whatever extraordinary journey Bond embarks upon next, the quest for the subsequent fearless director will begin—that is, unless Villeneuve’s project is a resounding success, potentially encouraging his return for another installment.
Just as M understood that the best results come from giving her top agent freedom, it raises an important question: would the studio limit a director known for some of the past decade’s most celebrated films? Villeneuve remarked in his official statement, “To me, he’s sacred territory. I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come. This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honor.“
An integral component of this mission remains incomplete—securing a writer for Villeneuve’s Bond vision. As of now, no writers have been confirmed. The writing must commence while Villeneuve embarks on his final journey to Arrakis with Dune: Messiah. Only then will we discover if James Bond will return resembling Spider-Man, a relaxed gentleman enjoying a quiet moment, or someone with a curious preference for a glass of milk over a martini.
