Recently, the trend of co-op mods has taken the gaming world by storm, thanks to that dedicated FromSoft modder who introduced seamless multiplayer to games like Elden Ring, Sekiro, and Dark Souls Remastered. Now, enthusiasts of the Yakuza series have a new treat.

The Intertwined Fates mod for Yakuza 5 allows players to experience almost the entire game in co-op mode or with an AI partner. While the game’s main protagonist, Kazuma Kiryu, is known for his solo adventures, modder Jhrino had the creative idea to introduce the beloved character Ichiban Kasuga into the narrative, despite the fact he doesn’t belong to this timeline.

This creative liberty highlights the enchantment of modding. While it might defy the game’s original canon—since Ichiban is the central figure in the seventh and eighth Like a Dragon series—it’s an exciting new way to play. The mod seamlessly integrates Ichiban into various parts of the game, except the free roam areas. But don’t worry, dance battles with Haruka and other activities like hunting, taxi challenges, and idol battles are now available for cooperative enjoyment.

In this enhanced experience, Ichiban boasts his own moveset and makes appearances in cutscenes. Should you find his mute cameos during intense scenes a bit unsettling, you can adjust settings via the instructions on the NexusMods page. Options are available to keep him in cutscenes or have him solely for gameplay. Primarily designed for local co-op, the Nexus page also provides guidance on turning it into an online experience.

Long before the announcement of Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, the idea for a JRPG about fan-favorite Majima was pitched by his voice actor, only to be initially dismissed. Now, with this mod, fans can explore fascinating new realms and adventures.
