Warning: This article contains spoilers for Daredevil: Born Again episode 4. The recent episode introduced Jon Bernthal’s Punisher to the MCU, marking his debut. Surprisingly, Bernthal nearly chose not to participate, having walked away from the show’s initial proposal.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Bernthal expressed disinterest in the initial concept for the series. “Ultimately, I didn’t see it,” Bernthal remarked. “The vision for Frank didn’t resonate with me, and I believed it wouldn’t appeal to the fans or align with their expectations,” Bernthal explained. “It was not a project I felt compelled to pursue, so we stepped back.”

The production saw a significant revamp following the Hollywood strikes, pausing filming until producer Dario Scardapane was brought on as the new showrunner. Scardapane, known for his previous collaboration with Bernthal on The Punisher TV show, played a pivotal role in rekindling Bernthal’s interest. “They truly engaged me in the discussion,” he elaborated regarding his talks with Scardapane and Marvel. “We delved deeply into Frank’s mental and physical states.”

The recent episode of Daredevil: Born Again features a poignant, albeit brief, encounter between Frank Castle and Matt Murdock, showcasing some of the series’ most emotional dialogue. Co-star Charlie Cox revealed that Bernthal occasionally rewrote his lines spontaneously, adding a unique flair.
