Atomfall, a survival RPG inspired by the likes of Fallout, invites players to explore a post-apocalyptic 1950’s England where nearly every NPC is fair game. This design choice stemmed from the developers’ determination to avoid leaving players with a slew of indestructible quest-givers.
During the Future Games Show Spring Showcase – Live from GDC, lead programmer Richard May discussed the challenges of creating such a dynamic environment. “Maintaining the game state while allowing players to kill nearly any character posed an interesting dilemma,” he explained. “We’ve struck a balance that grants players the liberty to explore a captivating story, which we hope will deliver a freedom rarely encountered in games.”
Emphasizing player freedom, May added, “You’re left to your own devices; no directives pointing you in a singular path.” With clues aplenty, it’s up to players to decide their course of action, whom to ally with, or even whom to eliminate in their zone. The choice is yours to make or break relationships or even engage in combat without restrictions.
All these thrilling decisions await as Atomfall launches on Steam, PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X on March 27. Discover which characters’ survival is in your hands while experiencing unfettered gaming freedom.
