Hollywood is taking another stab at reviving the Resident Evil series after a six-movie saga and a reboot that didn’t quite hit the mark. This time, they might have secured a familiar face from the cast of Euphoria. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Austin Abrams, known for playing Ethan in the acclaimed series, could soon find himself battling the undead in a fresh take that already promises some remarkable talent.

The announcement builds on the recent news that Zach Cregger, director of Barbarian, will be both writing and directing this latest adaptation of the iconic survival horror game series. Following the hair-raising success featuring Bill Skarsgård, Georgina Thompson, and Justin Long, Cregger is polishing his next film, Weapons—a ‘multistory’ horror flick revolving around missing high school students. It’s no coincidence Abrams is involved here, given that the film also features a star-studded lineup including Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, June Diane Raphael, Benedict Wong, and Alden Ehrenreich.

While Abrams’ involvement is still in the discussion phase, the project is rapidly gaining momentum. With Sony eager to propel this zombie thrill ride forward, Cregger is already in Europe scouting for ideal filming spots. Could this version of the franchise pivot away from Raccoon City to explore the eerie, rustic settings familiar to fans of titles like Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and Resident Evil: Village? Given Cregger’s recent work in Barbarian, one might wonder if we’ll see the live-action appearance of the towering Lady Dimitrescu. Here’s hoping it doesn’t stir up another wave of wild memes!
