Just like the iconic weapon itself, Hollywood has repeatedly slashed through the rich legacy of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The outcomes haven’t always been gratifying, except notably the 2003 remake, which is actually a standout. However, things might be on the verge of transformation with the news that the rights to this chilling property are on the market, and some fascinating figures are eager to breathe new life into it.

According to Deadline, director JT Mollner of Strange Darling fame, along with producer Roy Lee, has their sights set on the Sawyer saga, eager to infuse their own blood-soaked twist into the franchise. If everything falls into place, it’d be a perfect fit, considering Mollner’s commendable handling of his own darkly twisted murder story that garnered rave reviews. Fueling more interest in this potential new chapter is the enthusiasm of Texan native Glen Powell, who seems interested in exploring Mollner’s vision.

However, tackling such a renowned franchise means Mollner will likely face fierce competition from other directors and studios keen on wielding the chainsaw themselves. As The Hollywood Reporter notes, another significant name in the mix is IT director Andy Muschietti, who is reportedly also drawn to this menacing narrative.

The rights are currently with Verve, a company overseeing them since 2017. Their last project was the 2022 Netflix horror series, a legacy sequel that didn’t ignite further development. In a conversation with Deadline, a company representative stated, “Verve represents The Texas Chainsaw Massacre estate and is crafting a multimedia strategy for this legendary horror franchise. Although it hasn’t officially pitched the property to creators, producers, or buyers, preemptive packages are already arriving due to its hot and iconic status.”

For now, we stand by and watch the bidding war unfold over who will dare face Leatherface and see who emerges victorious, or, more appropriately, what’s left of them. Meanwhile, explore this thrilling list of effective horror remakes that prove some retellings can be simply terrifyingly great.
