John Boyega, who portrayed Finn, shared his conversation with director J.J. Abrams about seeking a ‘level of growth’ for his character in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Boyega was eager to move beyond the frequent ‘falling’ he experienced throughout the sequel trilogy.

During a panel at Emerald City Comic Con (via Popverse), Boyega commented, “I was doing a lot of falling in Star Wars. So, I asked J.J., ‘Can I be on my feet a little bit longer?’” Initially introduced as a co-lead opposite Daisy Ridley’s Rey in The Force Awakens, Boyega’s character seemed to take a step back in The Last Jedi. This middle installment, directed by Rian Johnson, showed Finn reviving from a coma and engaging in missions for the Resistance, including a memorable clash with Captain Phasma.

“There was a level of growth from The Last Jedi to The Rise of Skywalker that J.J. and I discussed,” Boyega confessed, expressing his frustration to Abrams. “I’m sick and tired of eating dirt, J.J. I know how to move. My lightsaber skills are undeniable. Get me out there on the field.”

This request was met with action-packed scenes in the trilogy’s conclusion. “I remember J.J. coming up to me and saying, ‘John, we’ve got you, we’ve got Poe, we’ve got Chewbacca running through the corridors, taking out these stormtroopers.’ That was the moment I felt fulfilled.”

The future for Finn in Star Wars is yet undefined, but a new movie featuring Daisy Ridley as Rey is on the horizon.
