Aang’s upcoming cinematic journey is shining brighter with the addition of Steven Yeun, famed for his roles in The Walking Dead and Invincible. Yeun is set to grace the forthcoming film inspired by Avatar: The Last Airbender‘s universe.

This exciting news comes courtesy of Variety, though specific details about Yeun’s character remain under wraps. We do not yet know which nation his character might hail from. Fans might remember Yeun’s compelling performance as Wan, the first Avatar, in The Legend of Korra. While it’s tempting to speculate a reprise, no official confirmation supports this theory.

Currently dubbed Aang: The Last Airbender—as the title Avatar is famously associated with another blockbuster franchise—the film is set to be directed by Lauren Montgomery and aims for a release in 2026. This sequel endeavors to explore the lives of beloved characters years after the original series.

Yeun joins an assembled cast with Eric Nam portraying Aang, and Jessica Matten as Katara. They are joined by Dionne Quan as Toph Beifong, Román Zaragoza as Sokka, and Dave Bautista as a currently unnamed villain. This project marks the second expansion of the rich Avatar storyline in recent times.

Netflix ventured into a live-action adaptation of the show in 2024 and plans are underway for two additional seasons. Concurrently, Aang: The Last Airbender emerges from Nickelodeon and Paramount, produced by the original series creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino.

Konietzko and DiMartino’s involvement ensures authenticity, especially after their exit from Netflix following creative disputes, subsequently leading to a collaborative opportunity with Nickelodeon.

Outside the Avatar world, Yeun recently starred alongside Robert Pattinson in Mickey 17, and engaged audiences with the Netflix series Beef. For fans eager to catch his voice once more in the realm of superheroes, be sure to explore Invincible season 4.
