Netflix producer Adi Shankar was filled with a unique nervousness upon meeting the legendary voice actor Kevin Conroy. Despite his ease around stars like Brad Pitt and Ryan Reynolds, the man who defined Batman for over two decades managed to get Adi’s palms sweaty while working on the new Devil May Cry anime adaptation.

Reflecting on Conroy, Shankar says, “With Kevin – I think it’s just different when someone is so linked to your childhood.” In this vibrant rendition of Devil May Cry, Conroy voices the character VP Baines, delivering a memorable performance before his passing in 2022.

Alongside Conroy, the series boasts an impressive voice lineup, including Johnny Young Bosch, fondly remembered as the second Black Power Ranger and someone Shankar admired in his youth. This depth of talent extends with another posthumous role performed by the remarkable Tony Todd, known as the original Candyman.

Discussing Todd and Conroy, Shankar conveys, “These are legendary actors. They’re legendary performers. And, I’m just so, so grateful that they agreed to be a part of this, that we got to have them in this universe of the show.”

In his reflections, Shankar is ardent that Kevin Conroy deserves recognition. “Posthumously, I do feel like he’s entitled to some awards here,” Shankar states. “His contributions to the world of animation are just so vast. I would love for him to be in award conversations.”

Shankar emphasizes the authentic artistry of Conroy’s “amazingly nuanced performance” in the show, confidently assuring that “no AI” was involved.
