The long-awaited live-action Legend of Zelda movie has finally been given a release date, revealed in the most unexpected manner.
Nintendo broke the news today through its newly launched mobile app, confirming that the film will premiere globally on March 26, 2027. The directorial reins of this exciting project have been handed to Wes Ball, who is known for his work on Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and the popular Maze Runner trilogy starring Dylan O’Brien.
Announced initially in 2023, this feature-length adaptation brings to life the cherished video game saga that first debuted in 1986. The most recent installment, The Echoes of Wisdom, was released in 2024. The series unfolds in the mythical land of Hyrule, chronicling the adventures of the elf-like warrior, Link, who endeavors to save the elegant Princess Zelda from the grasp of the malevolent Ganon.
A computer-animated Zelda movie surfaced as a concept in 2007, but it was shelved due to the commercial flop of 1993’s live-action Super Mario Bros. movie. However, it was the resounding triumph of the 2023 Super Mario Bros. Movie that sparked a change of heart, prompting the green light for Zelda’s live-action feature.
Currently, casting remains under wraps. Fans have speculated about Hunter Schafer portraying Princess Zelda, while Machine Gun Kelly made a humorous bid to play Link; nonetheless, his stature proved a mismatch for the role.
